Today, we’re very pleased to announce that we are replacing all plastic shrink film consumer packaging across all mixed multipack cans of Pedigree, Whiskas, Chappie and Kitekat pet food in the UK.
The move will see 180 tonnes of plastic removed from the environment every single year – the equivalent of 30 elephants. The new packaging is made from cardboard, meaning it is now fully recyclable, removing 15 million individual pieces of plastic annually.
As part of our global sustainable packaging ambitions, at Mars we’re taking action to redesign our packaging portfolio as we work toward our goal of 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable packaging by 2025.
This latest move builds on our recent partnership with Pets At Home, which saw dedicated in-store recycling points for pet food packaging introduced across 40 UK stores, and our participation in Asda’s trial of in-store refill zones, which provided the first pet care offering with products from popular Mars brands, Whiskas and Pedigree. Further changes in 2021 saw Pedigree Schmackos packaging reduced by 12 per cent, while all Dreamies 60g packs became thinner, which led to a combined 27.6 tonnes of virgin plastic saved in the UK.
