The science is clear – climate change is real, and around the world people are already beginning to feel the effects.
In order to be Sustainable in a Generation, we’ve looked at the best-available science, which tells us we must reduce the total (greenhouse gas) GHG emissions across our value chain 27 percent by 2025 and 67 percent by 2050 (from 2015 levels) to do our part to keep the planet from warming beyond 2 degrees Celsius. Here’s how we are working towards that goal:
- We committed to achieve net-zero GHG emissions in our direct operations by 2040 (from about 420 sites in more than 80 countries). We are making progress by sourcing renewable electricity at scale, and supporting advances in renewable thermal solutions.
- Mars is already using or purchasing renewable electricity to cover more than 50% of our total footprint, including 100 percent of our operations in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Lithuania, Mexico, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. Beyond these 10 countries, we have signed a new 20-year power purchase agreement with Total EREN to purchase 100 percent of our electricity in Australia from solar power starting in 2020.
Transforming Supply Chains To Protect Our Climate
To fully tackle our GHG emissions, we are working to improve how food is produced throughout our extended supply chain. Three-quarters of our full value chain carbon footprint comes from agricultural and land use change emissions associated with the ingredients we source to make our products.
We are working to transform key supply chains by partnering with suppliers, farmers and others to prevent deforestation and produce ingredients more efficiently for a lower carbon footprint. Sustainable agricultural practices, such as efficient irrigation, resilient crops, and increased soil health will not only improve environmental impacts, but also help farmers thrive.
In addition, collaborations with suppliers and farmers, large and small, will be critical to making progress to prevent deforestation. We’re working with them to ensure that growing key ingredients doesn’t destroy forests or degrade natural lands and explore opportunities to sequester carbon in soil and trees, so that we can protect forests for generations to come.
